Katherine Rey Samels aka K.Rey is a painter, guitarist & songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. Originally from Minneapolis, she comes from a Mexican-American family of artists and musicians and has been creating visual art since childhood.
She also has an extensive background in music having been one of the co-founders of the female queer band the Bloods, She was also the guitar player for the first all female Haitian Compas
band Riske.
For the last 15 years, painting has become the primary focus for Katherine as it allows for her expression in a more tactile and object-based way. Her paintings echo a synthesis of abstract expressionism and folk art. She often uses symbols, & vibrant colors to evoke a chaos, which is ordered by deliberate brush strokes. Major influences in her work are her Mexican American roots, and Latin American Surrealism.
Katherine works with acrylics, watercolors, paint markers and ink on wood, canvas and paper. She has studied both music and art at Cooper Union, School of Visual Arts & The New School in New York City. Katherine is a mother of one son and lives and works in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, N.Y.
The intention when I paint, is to create a philosophical landscape, an invitation to a place where struggle and strength can coexist. By expressing themes such as our common human frailty; (whether seen in the natural world, sexuality, alienation, death or sorrow), it allows for a parallel expression of the joy of being alive to emerge. Throughout my work; both as a painter or as a musician, the attempt to reconcile an inner duality and quell a search for belonging, drives my attention and offers ever-present inspiration.
