Katherine Rey Samels aka K.Rey is a painter, guitarist & songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. Originally from Minneapolis, she comes from a Mexican-American family of artists and musicians and has been creating visual art since childhood.

She also has an extensive background in music having been one of the co-founders of the female queer band the Bloods, She was also the guitar player for the first all female Haitian Compas

band Riske.  For the last 15 years, painting has become the primary focus for K.Rey as it allows for her expression in a more tactile and object-based way. Her paintings echo a synthesis of surrealism, abstract expressionism and folk art. She often uses symbols, & vibrant colors to evoke a chaos, which is ordered by deliberate brush strokes. Major influences in her work are her Mexican American roots, and Latin American Surrealism. K.Rey works with acrylics, watercolors, paint markers and ink on wood, canvas and paper.  She has studied both music and art at Cooper Union, School of Visual Arts & The New School in New York City.  Katherine is a mother of one son and lives and works in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, N.Y.

My creative passion is the driving force behind my life. My work often explores themes of duality, tension, nature, sexuality, death, gender, and sorrow. Raised in a Mexican American family in the Midwest, I was profoundly impacted by the racial, cultural, and class divides I both witnessed and experienced. I am compelled to express these themes within a wider and more conceptual framework..
